The preferred and most cost-effective method of transporting large quantities of people is rail. Due to the increasing demand placed on railway infrastructure and a determined effort to reduce carbon emissions, there is a movement to replace old diesel trains with electric/hybrid engines. In order to achieve this, major sections of the rail need to be electrified. Substations provide protection to the circuits and the overhead lines that connect to the train. Integrated into a substation are the switchgear and the command and control system enabling the safe management and operation of the equipment.
EPS founded Switchgear Substation Alliance (SSA) as a Joint Venture with Electren and Amco-Giffen to coordinate the supply of Containerised Air Insulated Switchgear (CAIS) for electrification projects in the UK. EPS is able to design and manufacture substations for other electrification projects using the latest integrated CAD systems and Building Information Modelling (BIM) strategies.
