Case Study – Customised Actuators

Customer: G&W Electric

EPS were selected by G&W Electric to design two new magnetic actuators for their future vacuum auto-recloser circuit breakers.

EPS and G&W agreed a detailed scope of works and functional design specification, detailing the technical parameters, and a project plan to deliver the new product.

Process

Both actuators required extensive collaboration between G&W and EPS where a number of options were proposed, designed, discussed and agreed.

To design the customised actuators, EPS used a range of data that has been collected over years of designing Mag-Latch magnetic actuators to set a ‘base design’ for the concept actuator development.

This concept was turned into detailed design for prototype development following a series of magnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation and kinetic motion studies, coupled with 3D CAD modelling and rapid prototyping at EPS.

EPS fully manufactured & tested the units using our in-house test lab, delivering full sets of mechanical and electrical reports on performance.

Following approval of the design the products were industrialised for volume manufacturing.

Summary

This collaboration resulted in actuators that are based on EPS’s existing magnetic actuator principles.

The actuators met the clients’ approval for dynamic performance, cost and reliability.
